6 Ways to Celebrate Self-Care Awareness Month in Dallas
Check out our list of ideas for experiences and things to do this month to give back to yourself.
September is Self-Care Awareness Month, and it is a time to remind us that taking care of ourselves is essential, especially during these trying times. We are sharing a list of ideas for experiences and things to do in Dallas this month to give back to yourself.
1. Stop and smell the roses at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the garden and sit by the reflection pools to connect with yourself and the beauty around you. Catch the Summer Sculpture exhibit before it ends on Sept. 7, be the first to explore this year's Autumn at the Arboretum display when it opens on Sept. 19, or treat yourself to a cooking class or demo at a Tasteful Place.
2. Get some fresh air by exploring the outdoors! Grab your bike and ride the Katy Trail, paddle around White Rock Lake or jump on the McKinney Avenue Trolley and discover something new. If you decide to do something outdoors, be sure to do so mindfully. Take deep breaths and truly cherish the air and space around you while also being mindful of social distancing and others' space.
3. Spend a beautiful day at Klyde Warren Park. Take advantage of when the weather is perfect to participate in a free yoga class (registration required), read a book on the lawn, have a picnic lunch or indulge in a treat from one of the food trucks. No matter what activities are scheduled for the day, you can go to the park for a time of relaxation and reflection against a beautiful backdrop of the Dallas skyline.
4. If you are an art lover, carve out some time to go on an art adventure through Dallas. Discover the wonders of the Dallas Museum of Art's in-person (Friday through Sunday) or virtually. For an inspiring virtual experience, check out the Letters Aloud series featuring real letters from real people throughout history (including Frederick Douglass, Barack Obama, Mahatma Gandhi, Margaret Mitchell, W. E. B. Du Bois and Jackie Robinson) writing about their experiences in times of pandemics, civil rights activism, and finding hope, meaning and humor when times are particularly tough.
5. Take a journey through the Bishop Arts District. Find a treasure at a local boutique, people watch and indulge in a latte at a coffee shop, read a book and enjoy a glass of wine at Wild Detectives or take yourself out to a nice brunch. If you've already explored the Bishop Arts District, take time to finally check out a Dallas neighborhood you've never been to before. You deserve it!
6. Go on a mindful shopping spree to the Dallas Farmers Market. Buy some fresh fruit, handmade accessories, candles, homemade treats and more! Take time to talk with the vendors at The Shed and ask questions about their products – you will appreciate their work and the items more. It's not everyday we get to meet the folks who make our goods, so be sure to take advantage of the opportunity. After you spend quality time at the Shed, head the Market for nourishment. Enjoy a personal pizza from BellaTrino's Neapolitan Pizzeria, grab a few tacos from Taqueria La Ventana or try something new. Check out more places to shop in Dallas with this guide.
